Welcome to Xile!
Some friends and I decided that we wanted to learn more about web
design and computers in general and we decided that the best way to do
that was to start a community that would bring people together to do just that. With
the help of some people from #opensource on irc.wyldryde.org, we
started the community you now see.
We work on projects, talk in forums and our chatroom in order to
learn and find friends who enjoy doing what we do. We are just trying
to spread something that we all enjoy doing while having fun with a
few freinds and learning along the way.
If you are wanting to learn something new, or even just keep sharp
while having fun and making friends, you are in the right place.
You may ask why we decided to call the community Xile.
It all goes back to when we first formed a chat channel on a small
irc network. We were a bunch of web developers and open source gurus.
We lived in exile on that network as many people didn't understand our
passion or our desire to share our knowledge and passion with others.
We soon created our own web site to bring our knowledge and projects
to a central location. Bringing people together to discuss, learn, and
teach development became our mission. We decided we liked being called
the Exiled developers, so with a play on the word, we registered the
Xile domain and have been here since.

Open Source: Do You Ubuntu? Posted by jpmk12 on Sunday, November 19 @ 11:07:30 MST (1120 reads) Topic Open Source
| Ubuntu is really taking off as a Linux distro. Tons of people are changing to Ubuntu while tons of people are discovering it for the first time each day. But what makes this such a great linux distro? I poked around a little bit and found a few reasons.
First, Ubuntu has a wide user base so they are very well supported. You can find help on their support forums, online documentation, and their own WIKI. You can find the answer to almost any problem on the three sources listed above as well as some tutorials here on Xile.
Ubuntu also has a package manager which automatically boosts it above a lot of other distros in many peoples eyes. The package manager allows you to install programs and dependents easily. You are able to select packages and programs from a list. Ubuntu the takes care of the rest making it easy to manage your system. An add or remove programs option also comes with Ubuntu.
Ubuntu also comes with the gnome GUI which I think is very clean and crisp. Many of the things you need to operate a desktop come pre installed on ubuntu. A standard Ubuntu install contains a selection of useful applications. In the Applications menu. you will find OpenOffice 2.0 for word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations, Gimp for image editing and more.
For all your personal information management needs, Evolution is there. Whether you need to simply check you email, create a calendar, or search for a contact, Evolution can help you. Evolution also can connect to an Microsoft Exchange or other mail server, for an easier transition to Ubuntu.
On the developer side, Ubuntu comes with hundreds of available packages for web design, graphics, and development. They also feature a special LAMP server edition which allows you to run a functional web server with ease.
Over all, Ubuntu is my favorite distro of linux so far. It easy to install and use. The package manager makes it easy to get new software. Automatic updates are also a good thing. Gnome takes the cake here too.
I would recommend it as an operating system for first time linux users all the way up to serious developers.
We Ubuntu, do you?
