PhaserJavaScriptVite

A kid-friendly side-scrolling car-combat & upgrade game — drive a junky cardboard car across five wild lands, smash silly monsters, collect supplies, and upgrade your way to a rocket-firing battle tank.

The game

Five biomes — Goblin Greenwood, Zombie Flats, Bandit Badlands, Frostbite Peaks, and the Volcano Fortress — each with its own enemies, hazards, mini-bosses, and a boss whose defeat unlocks the next tier of the upgrade tree: five car bodies and five weapons. Four base enemy archetypes (Runners, Brutes, Lobbers, Flyers) get biome-specific twists like Chargers, Shielded foes, Splitters, and Divers.

The car drives itself and auto-fires; you aim up/down (arrows or touch) and jump (Space/W or tap). Kill combos build ×2–×5 multipliers that reward clean play, Kid Mode adds invincibility for younger players, and a bonus Freestyle mode runs endless waves with stackable power-ups that eventually turn your cardboard car into a gun-tower tank blasting bolts, rockets, and missiles.

How it’s built

Phaser 3 for the game framework, Vite for dev and bundling, plain JavaScript ES modules throughout. The interesting constraint: no binary assets at all — every sprite and sound is code-generated. A real-art pipeline lets PNG files dropped into public/assets/sprites/ replace the generated placeholders without code changes, and GitHub Actions deploys to GitHub Pages on push.

Design notes

Weapons differ strategically rather than numerically — the Catapult and Rocket deal splash damage while the Cannon pierces lines of enemies — and each car body trades durability for jump height, so “best” depends on how you play.
