Ocean Voyage
A kid-friendly browser game inspired by Polynesian seafaring. Sail an outrigger canoe across a painted ocean — collect treasures, befriend dolphins and turtles, complete Grandma Moana's quests, paint your boat, and watch day cycle into starry night.
The game
A 13-quest chain from Grandma Moana introduces every system progressively: find shells and starfish, befriend dolphins and sea turtles, visit four islands (Home, Reef Atoll, Volcano, Pearl Atoll), and finally face Crusher the Crab — a goofy giant boss you defeat by circling him three times, worth 80 gold and rare loot.
The world runs a 3-minute day/night cycle with sun, moon, and stars, and weather that moves from clear to cloudy to rain to rainbow — deliberately no scary storms. NPC canoes sail real Polynesian trade routes and greet you in six languages. Six collectible types (3g shells up to 200g treasure chests) feed boat upgrades — cargo, speed, hull strength, pickup range — plus hull/sail/pattern/captain customization, 31 achievements in a four-tab Treasure Book, and two mini-games (Coconut Catch and timing-based Fishing).
How it’s built
One index.html, zero dependencies, no build step — roughly 3,400 lines of vanilla JavaScript drawing to a Canvas 2D context in 2.5D oblique projection. Audio is procedurally generated with the Web Audio API; narration uses the Web Speech API; progress persists to localStorage. Touch, keyboard, and mouse all work.
Designed for non-readers
This was the central design problem: the target player can’t read yet. The answers — voice narration for all text, an on-screen joystick, a pulsing waypoint ring pointing at the current objective, and feedback scaled by importance (floating “+N” popups, coin showers, confetti, screen shake) — are the parts most worth borrowing for any kids’ game.
